The oldest observatory of Karahunj, better known as Zorats Karer (in Armenian “stones of strength”) in Armenia, along with seven most interesting places around the world, is included in the top list of the popular National Geographic magazine. The Karahunj Megalithic Monument, also called the “Armenian Stonehenge”, is located on the territory of the Republic of Armenia, 200 km away from Yerevan, in the north-western part of Syunik , the region of Armenia near the city of Sisian. Geographic included the Armenian Stonehenge – the megalithic complex of Karahunj, in the list of the oldest places to observe the starry sky. “It includes 223 vertically standing large stones, weighing up to 10 tons”, the publication writes. In regard to this mysterious stone structure, Academician Paris Heruni in the 90-s of the last century put forward a sensational hypothesis, calling it the most ancient astronomical observatory of all those discovered at that time, and he gave it the name Carahunge (or Karahundj), officially registered by Armenia.
