• Visit to the Haghpat Monastery (10th century). It is believed that the monastery is home to a sacred spring whose water has healing properties and is especially beneficial for people with heart conditions. According to legend, two great architects — a father and his son — initially began building the Sanahin Monastery together. Later, after a disagreement, the son decided to construct his own monastery. Sanahin is renowned for its exquisite “lace-like” khachkars (stone crosses), each featuring a unique ornamental design with no two alike.
• Excursion to the Sanahin Monastery, which served as an important religious and cultural center during the reign of the Kyurikid dynasty (10th–12th centuries). The legend continues that the son-architect succeeded in creating a magnificent monastery that deeply impressed his father. Upon seeing his son’s masterpiece, the elderly architect exclaimed with admiration, “Ah, pat!” (“What a wall!”). This exclamation is believed to have given the Haghpat Monastery its name.
• Lunch.
• The Sanahin Bridge is located in the town of Alaverdi, in the Lori region, spanning the Debed River. It is considered one of the most significant engineering achievements of medieval Armenia. The bridge was built at the end of the 12th century by order of Queen Vaneni Kyurikyan, in memory of her prematurely deceased husband, King Abbas Bagratuni. With its graceful form, variety of stone textures, and warm colors, this basalt bridge blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape and stands as an inseparable treasure of the region.
