Russia returns Armenia’s stolen Vrubel painting

Russian President Vladimir Putin handed the picture of Mikhail Vrubel to the President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, “The Demon and the Angel with the Soul of Tamara”, stolen from Armenia in 1995. According to the presidential press service, Putin handed the picture during the opening ceremony of the Days of Armenian Culture in Russia. The presidents examined the exhibition of works by Martiros Saryan, after which the ceremony of transferring the painting took place. The canvas, illustrating Lermontov’s poem “Demon”, was kept in the Museum of Russian Art in Yerevan. In the Ministry of Culture of Armenia, the cost of painting is estimated at several hundred thousand dollars.
