Jermuk waterfall
Jermuk Waterfall flows from the Arpa River in Vayots Dzor province and is often considered the highest waterfall in Armenia, plunging an astonishing 70 meters into the river gorge. Located within the Jermuk resort center, it is a popular destination for visitors year-round. The waterfall is also known as “Mermaid’s Hair” because of its long, flowing cascade, which resembles hair streaming freely into the gorge. According to local legend, a princess of extraordinary beauty loved a shepherd’s son, despite many princes seeking her hand. To meet him secretly, she would lower a long rope into the gorge. When her father discovered their secret, he cursed her, saying that if they met again, she would turn into a mermaid and never return to land. Undeterred, the princess threw her hair into the gorge, and at that moment, they were transformed into the waterfall—forever immortalized in nature.
Jermuk Waterfall is not only a breathtaking natural wonder but also a symbol of love and legend, making it a must-see for travelers exploring the Armenian Highlands.
