Sev Lich – The Mysterious Black Lake Nestled Among Armenia’s Mountains
Sev Lich (meaning “Black Lake” in Armenian) is one of Armenia’s most picturesque and mysterious alpine lakes. Located in the Syunik Province at an elevation of approximately 2,660 meters (8,727 ft) above sea level, near the Mets Ishkhanasar mountain range, the lake remains one of the country’s hidden natural treasures. Its remote location and pristine landscapes attract hikers, photographers, and travelers seeking untouched nature.
Why Is It Called Sev Lich?
The lake owes its name to the unusually dark color of its waters. On cloudy days, the surface appears almost black, reflecting the surrounding volcanic slopes and dramatic mountain skies. Under bright sunshine, however, the water transforms into deep shades of blue and emerald, creating a stunning contrast with the surrounding alpine meadows.
Nature and Atmosphere
Sev Lich was formed within the crater of an ancient volcano and is fed mainly by snowmelt and rainfall. Even during summer, the water remains remarkably cold. The surrounding highland pastures are home to rare alpine plants, while in late spring and early summer the hillsides bloom with colorful wildflowers.
The peaceful atmosphere is one of the lake’s greatest attractions. Far from busy tourist routes, visitors are surrounded only by the sounds of mountain winds, singing birds, and crystal-clear streams.
Legends of Sev Lich
Like many ancient places in Armenia, Sev Lich has inspired local legends. According to one story, a small village once stood where the lake is today. The villagers became selfish and refused to help a weary traveler. In response, the stranger cursed the settlement, and during the night the earth opened up, filling the valley with water. The lake’s dark surface is said to remind people that kindness and hospitality should never be forgotten.
Another local legend says that on calm, windless days, the lake reflects not only the surrounding mountains but also mysterious visions of the past—ancient fortresses and horsemen who once defended these rugged lands.
What to See Nearby
A trip to Sev Lich is often combined with a visit to Mount Ishkhanasar and other natural attractions of the Syunik region. The area is perfect for hiking, off-road adventures, and landscape photography. From the mountain peaks, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the volcanic plateau, surrounding valleys, and the tranquil waters of Sev Lich.
Visitor Information
The best time to visit is from June to September, when mountain roads are more accessible and the weather is ideal for outdoor activities. Even in summer, temperatures at this altitude can be quite cool, so warm clothing and sturdy hiking shoes are recommended. Because of the lake’s remote location, reaching it by four-wheel-drive vehicle or as part of an organized tour is the most convenient option.
Sev Lich is a destination where travelers can experience the raw beauty of Armenia’s highlands, immerse themselves in untouched nature, and discover one of the country’s most fascinating hidden gems.
