The Tanahat Monastery once was one of the most famous monasteries in Syunik region. This complex achieved the peak of its fame in the 13th -14th centuries, as the prominent Gladzor University is supposed to have been here. The university hosted many famous scholars and its graduates besides the religious studies, were engaged in science and manuscript writing. It was the art school of Gladzor which represented the Armenian miniature painting in a new way.
