Garni temple
Built on the site of an ancient Urartian temple, the Garni Temple is the only fully preserved example of Hellenistic architecture in Armenia. The temple represents a classic Greco-Roman peripteral structure, surrounded by elegant columns and set against the dramatic backdrop of the Garni Gorge. In addition to the magnificent temple itself, the archaeological site of Garni offers visitors many other historical attractions. Among them are the remains of the Garni Fortress, numerous khachkars (Armenian cross-stones), the ancient garrison, and the founding stone. The area also preserves the ruins of St. Sion Church, the remains of Mashtots Hayrapet Church, and the summer palace of the Armenian kings. Another highlight of the complex is the royal bathhouse, famous for its well-preserved mosaic floor, as well as the cuneiform inscription of King Argishti I, which dates back to the Urartian period.
Today, the Garni Temple complex is one of the most visited cultural landmarks in Armenia, where pagan history, classical architecture, and stunning natural scenery come together to create an unforgettable destination.
