Hovhannavank monastery

Hovhannavank Monastery rises dramatically on the edge of the Kassagh River canyon in the village of Ohanavan, Aragatsotn region. Its origins date back to the 5th century, making it one of the oldest monastic sites in Armenia. The main cross-domed church, constructed in 1216, is built from massive tufa blocks reaching up to 7 feet in height, reflecting the skill of medieval Armenian masons. On the western side of the main church stands a large four-column gavit, built in 1250, featuring an open rotunda above its central section. The defensive walls surrounding the complex date from the 13th–14th centuries, emphasizing the monastery’s role as both a spiritual and protective site. The area around Hovhannavank is adorned with numerous khachkars, intricately carved cross-stones that add to the historical and spiritual atmosphere. Today, the monastery combines architectural grandeur, scenic beauty, and a rich medieval heritage, making it a must-visit destination for travelers exploring Armenia’s religious landmarks.
