St. Mesrop Mashtots church

The Mesrop Mashtots Church, located in the village of Oshakan, dates back to the 5th–19th centuries. This important religious and historical site is closely associated with Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet. Mesrop Mashtots died in 444 AD and was buried in Oshakan. Soon after his burial, a small chapel was erected over his grave, turning the site into a place of pilgrimage and remembrance. In the second half of the 19th century, the original chapel was replaced by a basilica-type church, which stands on the site today. The church continues to serve as an important spiritual center and a monument dedicated to one of the most influential figures in Armenian history. Today, the Mesrop Mashtots Church in Oshakan remains a significant cultural and religious landmark, honoring the legacy of the man who created the Armenian alphabet and played a crucial role in the development of Armenian literature and education.
