Tsakhats Kar monastery
Tsakhats Kar Monastery is located in the mountains near the village of Eghegis in Armenia’s Vayots Dzor Province. This historic monastic complex is situated in a picturesque mountainous landscape and consists of two main groups of buildings. The western group dates back to the 10th century, although today it survives only in a partially ruined state. The eastern group, built in the 11th century, is comparatively well preserved and provides a clearer impression of the monastery’s original architectural appearance. One of the most remarkable features of the complex is a large bas-relief on the northern wall, depicting a dramatic battle between a lion and a bull. This relief is considered one of the largest and most impressive examples of its kind in Armenian medieval sculpture. A short distance to the east of the main church stands a two-story chapel-mausoleum, which adds further historical and architectural significance to the monastery complex. Today, Tsakhats Kar remains an important monument of medieval Armenian architecture and a fascinating destination for visitors exploring the cultural heritage of Vayots Dzor.
