The Temple of Warriors Among the Mountains of Syunik

Zorats Church, also known as Zorats Tachar (“Temple of the Warriors”), is one of the most unusual and mysterious churches in Armenia. It is located in the picturesque village of Yeghegis, surrounded by the dramatic mountains of Vayots Dzor, where ancient history seems to come alive in every stone. The church was built in 1303 under the patronage of Bishop Stepanos Orbelian, a representative of the famous Orbelian noble dynasty, which played an important role in medieval Armenian history.

The main feature of the church is its unique architecture, unlike any other Armenian church. Unlike traditional churches, Zorats Church has almost no enclosed interior space. The central part of the structure is an open-air area, while only the altar section is covered. This unusual design was created for a very special purpose.

According to tradition, the church was built specifically for Armenian warriors and horsemen. Before military campaigns, soldiers would gather here to receive blessings before battle. The altar was intentionally constructed at a height equal to that of a rider on horseback, allowing warriors to pray and receive blessings without dismounting. This is why the church became known as “Zorats,” meaning “warrior,” “strength,” or “related to the army.”

Standing in the courtyard of the church, one can easily imagine medieval Armenian knights in armor preparing for battle. The mountain wind, the silence of the ancient stones, and the open landscape create a powerful atmosphere of strength, faith, and spirituality.

Interestingly, Zorats Church was not only a place of worship. During the Middle Ages, manuscripts, church records, and important historical documents were preserved here. Some historians believe the church also served as a spiritual center for Armenian military forces defending the southern regions of Armenia.
