Currency
The official currency of Armenia is the Armenian dram (AMD). Banknotes in circulation include 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, and 100,000 dram. Coins of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 dram are also widely used. Armenian banknotes feature prominent national figures such as scientists, artists, and cultural icons, as well as important historical and architectural landmarks.
A new series of banknotes was introduced starting in 2018, featuring modern designs and enhanced security features. These newer notes were developed with the involvement of international design specialists.
Tourists can easily exchange US dollars, euros, and Russian rubles into AMD. Other foreign currencies may also be exchanged, but not in all exchange offices, so it is recommended to carry USD, EUR, or RUB when traveling to Armenia. Currency exchange services are widely available in banks, exchange offices, and some hotels, especially in Yerevan.
Credit and debit cards are accepted in many hotels, restaurants, and larger shops, particularly in the capital. However, in smaller towns, markets, and rural areas, cash is still the preferred method of payment. ATMs are widely available in cities and allow withdrawals in local currency.
