Horom fortress
About 1 km east of the village of Horom, visitors can find the impressive archaeological site known as Horom Fortress. The area lies near a dam and reservoir, where two prominent hills rise south of the road, crowned with massive ancient fortification walls. These walls date from the Bronze Age through the Urartian period, indicating that the site was inhabited and fortified for many centuries. Archaeological excavations carried out by Armenian and American researchers, including Ruben Badalian and Philip L. Kohl, have uncovered well-preserved defensive structures and deep cultural layers that reveal the long and complex history of the settlement. Horom Fortress is considered one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Armenia. In spring, the dark volcanic stones of the ancient walls contrast beautifully with the bright green grass that surrounds the hills. Throughout the area, visitors can easily notice fragments of ancient pottery and pieces of obsidian, silent reminders of the people who once lived here thousands of years ago.
