Baghaberd fortress
The Baghaberd Fortress is one of the ancient fortresses of Syunik Province, renowned for its naturally inaccessible location. Built on a high mountain ridge, the fortress once served as a powerful defensive stronghold controlling the surrounding territory. The construction of Baghaberd is traditionally attributed to Baghak of Syunik. His name is mentioned by the Armenian historian and metropolitan bishop Stepanos Orbelyan in his famous work History of the Province of Syunik. According to Orbelyan, Baghak, a representative of the Sisak dynasty, inherited the region and built the fortress, after which the surrounding territory became known as the “Land of Bagh.” The fortress once had double defensive walls, which strengthened its already advantageous natural position. Today, only partially ruined towers and pyramid-shaped structures, some reaching about 8 meters in height, have survived. Despite its ruined state, Baghaberd Fortress remains an important historical monument reflecting the military architecture and political history of medieval Syunik.
