Marzpetuni fortress
The Gevorg Marzpetuni Fortress is located 6 km northwest of Urtsadzor village in the Ararat region of Armenia. The complex was founded between the 10th and 13th centuries and served as a significant military and cultural center. The fortress features a semi-circular vaulted apse, while the inner rectangular perimeter encloses the ruins of a 12th–13th century church. The main church of the monastery-fortress, built in the 13th century, is a vaulted hall constructed from carefully hewn white felsite stones. Surrounding the church are fortress walls of rectangular plan, with each of the four corners reinforced by round towers. Along the southern and eastern walls, vaulted residential and service buildings were constructed, providing living space and storage for the garrison. Fortresses like Gevorg Marzpetuni were crucial military strongholds in medieval Armenia, combining defensive architecture with ecclesiastical and communal functions.
