Handaberd fortress
The medieval Handaberd Fortress dates back to the 13th century and is located in the mountainous region of Artsakh. The fortress rises dramatically on top of a steep rocky hill about 600 meters south of the Lev River, near the modern village of Knaravan. Although the main fortification walls were constructed and expanded during the medieval period, some of the earliest foundations are believed to date back to the 5th century, indicating that the site had strategic importance long before the fortress reached its present form. Over the centuries, the strong defensive walls were reinforced and enlarged, creating a powerful mountain stronghold. Today, the ruins of Handaberd Fortress remain extensive and impressive. A hiking trail from the village leads up the hillside toward the fortress, offering visitors panoramic views of the surrounding forests and mountains. On the opposite slope lies Handaberd Monastery, another historical site that can be reached by a rugged mountain road passing through the forest.
The dramatic location and historical significance of Handaberd make it one of the most remarkable medieval fortresses of the region.
