Tavush fortress
The medieval Tavush Fortress is located on the outskirts of the town of Berd in the Tavush Province, near the banks of the Aghstev River. In the past, the fortress played an important defensive role, guarding the nearby gorge and serving as a strong and almost impregnable stronghold. Several villages are located close to the fortress, including Navur, Chinchin, Verin Karmiraghbyur, and Norashen. Historical records first mention Tavush Fortress in the 10th century, when it served as the residence of the governors appointed by the Armenian king Ashot II of Armenia. During the 10th–11th centuries, the fortress belonged to the ruling Kyurikids.
Even today, archaeological traces of the past can still be found within the fortress grounds. Fragments of ancient pottery, household objects, and other artifacts are occasionally discovered here, offering insight into the life and history of this once-powerful medieval stronghold.
