Smbataberd fortress
The medieval Smbataberd Fortress dates back to the 10th–11th centuries and is located in the Vayots Dzor Province, east of the village of Artabuynk. Perched on a high mountain ridge, the fortress occupies a strategically advantageous position overlooking the surrounding valleys. The stronghold is protected by massive defensive walls, measuring about 2–3 meters in thickness, constructed from large blocks of basalt stone. These formidable fortifications, combined with the natural protection of the nearby Artabuni River and Yeghegis River, as well as steep surrounding canyons, made Smbataberd one of the most secure fortresses in the region. Inside the fortress, the territory was divided by additional defensive walls on the northern and southern sides. Remains of residential buildings, inner fortifications, and water reservoirs have survived to this day. The fortress was supplied with water through natural springs and specially constructed canals connected with the nearby Tsaghats Kar Monastery.
Today, the ruins of Smbataberd Fortress stand as a powerful reminder of Armenia’s medieval defensive architecture and offer visitors spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountainous landscape.
