Kachaghakaberd
The medieval Kachaghakaberd Fortress is located between the villages of Qolatak and Ptrecik. In historical sources, it is also known as the Khachen Fortress, reflecting its connection with the medieval principality of Khachen. The fortress was first mentioned in written records in the 8th century, during the period when the region was defending itself against Arab invasions. Built on a steep mountain peak, the fortress occupied an extremely strategic and naturally protected position. The name Kachaghakaberd, which translates as “Magpie Fortress,” comes from a local legend. According to tradition, the castle was so difficult to reach that only magpies could fly up to its summit, emphasizing the fortress’s almost impregnable location.
Today, Kachaghakaberd Fortress remains one of the most impressive examples of mountain fortifications in the region, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and dense forests that highlight its historic defensive strength.
