Boloraberd fortress
The medieval Boloraberd Fortress, also known as Proshaberd, is located in Vayots Dzor Province, about 6–7 kilometers north of the town of Vernashen. The fortress was built in the 13th century on a steep and naturally protected mountain, covering an area of approximately 1–1.5 hectares. Boloraberd was constructed by Prince Prosh Khaghbakian, a prominent Armenian noble who is also known for expanding the famous Geghard Monastery, where the sacred lance believed to have pierced Christ was once preserved. The fortress walls were built from basalt stone, making the structure extremely strong and durable. The complex also had a water supply system, and parts of the ancient water pipes can still be seen today. Several towers and sections of the defensive walls have survived in relatively good condition. Perched high above the surrounding landscape, Boloraberd Fortress remains an impressive example of medieval Armenian military architecture and offers breathtaking views of the mountains of Vayots Dzor.
